Little House on the Prairie

I introduced you to Paul McMullin from Ennis, Montana in a previous post and told you I would be sharing more of his work. Here is another little cabin he built and I will let him describe it to you.
I call this one the “Little House on the Prairie.” I built this because my mental health was deteriorating as I was sitting behind my desk late winter doing my usual business stuff for that time of year. I had to get outside and produce something regardless of the weather.

This is what I built. A 14 X 16 inside with a 4 x 14 foot deck. Not knowing how it might be used I left the inside as if you were in the belly of the whale, studs, rafters, and sheeting. I live in a small town of about 1000 so I know most people and most stopped by to see what Paul’s up to. The place was completed, a for sale sign was attached and my mind was back in order.
If you would like to contact Paul you can email him at paulmcmullin@hotmail.com.

I grew up watching 'Little House On The Prairie', as well as read some of the books on which the program was based. As a young kid, I was aware that some of the issues on the program were very serious, but I still considered it, like many of you, to be a 'family' program; sweet, sappy, and moralistic. As the years have worn on, I've watched the program in reruns. Lately, for the past 2-3 months, I've been watching back-to-back reruns nearly everyday, and have been extremely surprised at the darker layers to 'Little House' that I guess most people never picked up. Here's some of the darker subjects tackled on 'Little House' - murder, corruption, child rape/abuse/endangerment, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, accusations of adultery, etc. From this list you'd think you I was talking about a show you couldn't watch with your family. 'Little House' also dealt with death, destruction of one's home, the evils of gossip, alcoholism, divorce, kidnapping, racism/xenophobia/religious persecution, personal crisis, loss of faith, etc. Sure some episodes tried to have a resolution at the end of 60 minutes, but most did not. The characters were not perfect by a long shot; not even the main character Laura or even the Reverend Alden. I highly recommend 'Little House' to adults wanting to try something different out. A much better show than other 'family' shows of the time, like 'Eight Is Enough' (good but not as good as LH), and much, much better than the 'family' shows of the past decade including 'Dr. Quinn' and '7th Heaven'.

History of the Little House on the Prairie log cabin

Little House on the Prairie cabin
Recreation of Laura Igalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie cabin.
In 1869, the Ingalls' family moved to this location, 12 miles southwest of Independence, Kansas. They stayed here about a year before returning to their earlier home in Pepin, Wisconsin. Laura Ingalls Wilder was only 3 when the family lived in Kansas, but when she started writing the "Little House" books, she based Little House on the Prairie on memories of her older family members:  Pa, Ma, and Mary. The Michael Landon television series Little House on the Prairie was not set at this location, but at Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where the family moved in 1874.
The small Little House on the Prairie cabin at this location is a recreation based on the description found in the book. The foundation of a small house believed to have been the home of the Ingalls' family, was found at this location in 1977.
Two original buildings from the same time period have moved next to the reconstructed Little House on the Prairie. The interiors of all three buildings can be toured. There is no direct connection between any of these buildings and Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Many visitors will need only a few minutes to tour the site and may be satisfied with the view from the road during the winter when Little House on the Prairie is closed. The best time to visit may be during the Bluegrass on the Prairie festival in October, or the Prairie Days Festival in June.
New signs have been placed on Highway 75, making it easy to find from either the north or south.

Detail

Carrie, Mary, and Laura Ingalls frolic down a hill, as shown in the opening credits of the series.
Although it differed from the original books and many new characters and situations were added, this television series was one of the few long-running successful dramatic family shows (and it is still in syndication). Although predominantly a drama, the program did have some comedic moments, thanks to supporting cast members such as Mr. Edwards (played by Victor French) and the Oleson family: Nels Oleson (Richard Bull), Harriet Oleson (Katherine MacGregor), Willie Oleson (Jonathan Gilbert), and Nellie Oleson (Alison Arngrim).
The show's central characters are Charles Ingalls (Michael Landon), farmer and patriarch, with his wife, Caroline (Karen Grassle), and four daughters, Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson), Laura (Melissa Gilbert), Carrie (Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush) and Grace (Wendi and Brenda Turnbaugh), later adding adopted children Albert (Matthew Laborteaux), Cassandra (Missy Francis) and James (Jason Bateman).
Other essential characters included the friendly Nels Oleson, proprietor of the town's general store, Oleson's Mercantile; his malicious, gossiping wife, Harriet; and their two spoiled children, Nellie and Willie; and later, their adopted child, Nancy (Allison Balson). Also appearing in the series are former professional football player Merlin Olsen (as Jonathan Garvey), Dabbs Greer (as Reverend Robert Alden), Karl Swenson (as Lars Hanson, the town's founder and proprietor of the town's mill), and Kevin Hagen (as Dr. Hiram Baker, the town's physician). Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer appears as Mary Ingalls's teacher-turned-husband, Adam Kendall, whom she meets at the school for the blind in the 1978-1979 season. In the sixth season, Dean Butler joined the cast as Almanzo Wilder, and he and Laura are married in the seventh season premiere.
Michael Landon directed the largest number of episodes (87); producer William F. Claxton handled the majority of the remaining shows (68). Co-star Victor French helmed 19 episodes. Maury Dexter directed only a handful.
The series theme song was titled The Little House and was written and conducted by David Rose. The ending theme music, also written by Rose, originally appeared as a piece of incidental music in a later-season episode of Bonanza.
As with most TV series set in a distant time or place, historical inaccuracies and errors do appear. At the end of the episode "Country Girls" an airplane can be heard flying overhead. Little House on the Prairie was largely filmed on Big Sky Ranch at Simi Valley, California and as a result camera vistas sometimes pick up rugged chaparral terrain, far too mountainous and scrubby for Minnesota. One episode even depicted Laura running away and climbing up a mountain. California's oak savannas appears in many of the scenes and are considered to be representative of the real Walnut Grove. Dr. Baker's telephone was an anachronism since the telephone only existed in large cities in the 1880s. Also during the series run, several married women take teaching jobs during an era when only single women could teach. Several episodes mentioned peanut butter sandwiches, which were not introduced until the early 1900s. Another episode ("Wave Of The Future", from season eight) shows an elderly man, ostensibly Colonel Harland Sanders, attempting to sell his restaurant franchise to Mrs. Oleson. Sanders was actually born in 1890. In the episode titled "A Wiser Heart" Laura Ingalls Wilder attends an 1885 lecture by Ralph Waldo Emerson, however Emerson died in 1882.

[edit] Themes

Little House explored many themes and every episode was filled with family values, love, friendship, and faith. Adoption, alcoholism, racism and blindness were portrayed in the scripts. Some plots also included subjects such as drug addiction (i.e. morphine), leukemia, prejudice, and even rape.
Several of the episodes written by Michael Landon, were recycled storylines from ones that he had written for Bonanza. Such as: season two's "A Matter of Faith", based on the Bonanza episode "A Matter of Circumstance"; season five's "Someone Please Love Me", based on the Bonanza episode "A Dream To Dream"; season seven's "The Silent Cry", based on the Bonanza episode "The Sound of Sadness"; season eight's "He Was Only Twelve", based on the BonanzaBonanza episode "It's A Small World." episode "He Was Only Seven"; and season nine's "Little Lou", based on the

[edit] Continuity issues

  • Several actors who portrayed prominent roles played more than one character during the run of the show. Kyle Richards played Alicia Sanderson-Edwards in seasons two and three, but also played the daughter of Brett Harper in Someone Please Love Me in Season five. She also reprised the role of Alicia in The Return of Mr. Edwards in season six, and A Promise to Keep in Season eight. Hersha Parady played Charles's sister-in-law in Journey in the Spring in Season three before assuming the role of Alice Garvey in seasons four-six. Matthew Laborteaux also appeared in Journey in the Spring during a flashback sequence as a young Charles Ingalls. He would play young Charles again in I Remember, I Remember before assuming the role of Albert Ingalls in seasons five-eight. Ketty Lester appeared as Joe Kagan's wife in a flashback in The Fighter in season four, before playing Hester Sue beginning in season five. Ronnie Scribner first appeared as Jordan Harrison in Blind Man's Bluff in season five, and returned four years later to play Randall Page in the episode Rage in season nine. Perhaps the most reused actors in the whole series were E.J. Andre and Eddie Quillan, who played at least four roles during the show's run. Andre's most promient role came as Uncle Jed for two episodes of season eight.
  • There were a few characters who appeared for one episode as if they had been involved in the Ingalls' lives for quite some time, or as if they had always been prominent citizens of Walnut Grove, but disappeared after their episode with no explanation. Most of these characters showed up with no backstory or evidence of their existence prior to their appearance on the show. Some of these characters include Widow Thurman (from For My Lady in season two), Ruthy (from The Last Summer in season nine), Marvin of Marvin's Garden (season nine), and numerous children at the school.
  • The eventual demise of Albert Ingalls is called in to question by two episodes. In the epilogue of Home AgainLook Back to Yesterday, the viewer is led to believe Albert dies from a blood disorder around the age of 18. However, some viewers feel that since Albert's death is never actually shown, his return to Walnut Grove is entirely possible. However, this also could be called into question as the town of Walnut Grove was blown up in the final TV movie Little House: The Last Farewell. (season nine), as Albert's stage coach pulls away in the final scene, the viewer hears Laura in a voice-over stating Albert returns in his adult years as Dr. Albert Ingalls. However, in the post-series film
  • Two versions of Caroline Ingalls' maiden name are used in the series. In Journey in the Spring (season three) and I Remember, I Remember (season four), her maiden name is referred to as being "Holbrook", the name of her stepfather. It isn't until season six in Whatever Happened to the Class of '56? that we hear Caroline's actual maiden name, Quiner.
  • The marital status of Rev. Alden remains somewhat ambiguous. In the episode The Preacher Takes a WifeThe Faith Healer (season six). During the season seven episode Oleson vs. Oleson, Rev. Alden implies that his wife is amongst the protesting wives when he joins Charles, Almonzo, and Nels for dinner. He brings up his marital status again in A Promise to Keep in season eight, when he reveals to Mr. Edwards that his alcoholism cost him his first wife. (season six), Rev. Alden marries a member of his congregation, Anna Craig. However, she's never again seen on the show. Alden does mention her, almost in passing, while dining with the Ingalls at the beginning of the episode
  • Lars Hanson's estate is called into question in two different episodes. In the season five episode Blind Journey, the late Lars Hanson's house (which is the same house inhabited by Mr. Pike in Haunted House and Widow Thurman in For My Lady in season two) is left to Reverend Alden and the church, who decide to let the house be used as the new blind school. The house is later destroyed by a fire in the season six episode May We Make Them Proud. In the season nine episode Welcome To Olesonville, the house is still standing and bought by Harriet Oleson, who tries to control the town by using a bond issued to Lars Hanson that she found while cleaning the house. The exact same house is used later in season nine in the episode May I Have This Dance? as the lifelong home of Mrs. Mae Flannery (built many years ago by her deceased husband William). Mrs. Flannery dies later in the episode and wills the house to Laura (who then turns it into a boarding house).
  • In addition to the multiple uses of Lars Hanson's house, other houses and locations were also used by multiple families. The house used by the Davenports in the season six episode The Angry Heart is the same house inhabited by Almonzo and Eliza Jane Wilder (and later Laura Ingalls Wilder, until it is later destroyed by a tornado in season eight). The same farm house inhabited by Isaiah and Grace Edwards and their family in seasons two and three is later inhabited by the Garvey family in seasons four-seven. The pond and land shown in The Lake Kezia MonsterA Matter of Faith and was located in another town. The pond reappears in the season six episode The Preacher Takes a Wife located near Walnut Grove, but with no indication that Kezia's cabin ever existed next to it. in season five (which is established as existing on the outskirts of Walnut Grove and includes a small cabin) had originally appeared without the cabin in the season two episode
  • Almanzo's brother Royal makes two conflicting appearances in the series. In the season seven episode The Nephews, Royal appears with his wife (Millie) and two young sons, Myron and Rupert. His wife announces she is pregnant in this episode. Two years later in the season nine episode Times Are Changing, Royal reappears with a 10-year old daughter Jenny (who was not mentioned in the season seven episode, leading many viewers to believe that Millie was pregnant with Jenny during Royal's first appearance). Almonzo states that he has not seen Royal in a decade (although he appeared two years earlier). Royal mentions his wife had died and there is no mention of his two sons.
  • The show speeds up time with the characters aging only 9 years throughout the series run. Grace Ingalls should have been 8 years old when Laura and Almanzo got married. The first season takes place around 1875, while the end of the series takes place around 1889.

[edit] Syndication

The show is immensely popular in reruns in syndication. In the US, it currently airs on Hallmark Channel and on various local stations. Because of its historical context and its connection to the book series, it is deemed acceptable for use by the FCC to meet federal E/I programming guidelines.
In Canada, reruns of the series began airing weeknights on CTS, a Christian-based network, as of September 1, 2008.
In the US, television syndication rights are currently owned by CBS Television Distribution. Originally, NBC licensed these rights to Worldvision Enterprises, since networks could not own syndication arms at the time. As a result of corporate changes, Paramount Domestic Television and CBS Paramount Domestic Television would inherit the rights, finally passing to CTD in 2007.
NBC has always owned ancillary rights, and thus is the worldwide licensor for DVD rights as well (see below). Sister company NBC Universal International Television distributes the series internationally.

[edit] A roster of guest stars

During its nine season run, many unfamiliar and/or familiar actors who guest-starred on the show went on to greater fame; among those appearing in Little House episodes are: Sean Penn, David Faustino, Ernie Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Rick Hurst, Lucille Benson, Kim Richards, Anne Archer, Eileen Heckart, Gil Gerard, Johnny Crawford, Patricia Neal, Anne Ramsey, Richard Mulligan, William Schallert, James Cromwell, Bill Quinn, Louis Gossett, Jr., Billy Barty, Ralph Bellamy, Liam Sullivan, Arch Johnson, Parley Baer, Mike Lookinland, Todd Bridges, Ronnie Scribner, Eric Shea, Chris Petersen, Richard Basehart, Tom Lester, Chuck McCann, Jan Merlin, Ford Rainey, Bing Russell, Raymond St. Jacques, Nicolas Coster, Rance Howard, Tom Clancy, Matt Clark, Ricky Segall, Willie Aames, Dolph Sweet, Herb Armstrong, Paula Shaw, John Ireland, Joshua Bryant, Ray Bolger, Burl Ives, Richard Jaeckel, Jeff Corey, Mariette Hartley, John Hillerman, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Jonathan Banks, among many others.

[edit] Spin-offs and sequels

[edit] Little House: A New Beginning

A spin-off series of sorts, Little House: A New Beginning, built around Laura and Almanzo, aired on September 27, 1982. A new family, the Carters (Stan Ivar as John, Pamela Roylance as Sarah, Lindsay Kennedy as older son Jeb, and David Friedman as younger son Jason), move into the Ingalls' old home. Meanwhile, Almanzo and Laura take in their niece, Jenny Wilder (portrayed by pre-Beverly Hills 90210 star Shannen Doherty), when Almanzo's brother dies(presumably his two sons are also deceased) and raise her alongside their daughter, Rose. The Wilders appear prominently in some episodes, while in others, they appear only in early scenes used to introduce the story or its characters (see, for example, "The Last Summer"). The explanation given for the original characters' absence was that they moved to Burr Oak, Iowa to build a much better life. The show lost viewers, thus this version of the series was canceled after nineteen episodes. However, the show would live on for a couple more years in movie format.

[edit] Movie specials

Three made-for-television movie sequels followed: Little House: Look Back to Yesterday (1983), Little House: Bless All the Dear Children (1983), and Little House: The Last Farewell (1984). The big finale ended the series with a bang. The plot summary: Charles and Caroline decide to visit Walnut Grove. They learn that a railroad tycoon actually holds the deed to the township, and he wants to take it over for his own financial gain. Despite their best efforts, the townspeople are unable to drive the businessman away. At a town meeting, one of the residents offers a supply of explosives that he has. Each man takes turn blowing up his own building.[1]
When asked why the set was blown up, the show's producer, Kent McCray, said that when the series started, he made an agreement with the property owners that at the end of the series he would put the acreage back to its original state. When the production crew were estimating the cost of dismantling all the buildings, Michael Landon thought for awhile and said, "What if we blow up the town? That would get the buildings all in pieces and you can bring in your equipment to pick up the debris and cart it away." He then said that he would write it where they blow up all the buildings, except for the little house and the church. Both McCray and Landon wept as the town blew up.[2]
Two other Little House movies were made in conjunction with the Landon series: the 1974 pilot for the program and Little House Years (1979), a Thanksgiving special/clip show that aired in the middle of Season 6.

[edit] DVD releases

The entire series has been released on DVD. The North American DVD sets include exclusive interviews by the French Little House historian Patrick Loubatière and actors Alison Arngrim, Dabbs Greer and Dean Butler.
A majority of the episodes in the North American DVD versions have scenes cut from the episodes—these are derived from the syndicated television versions by Worldvision Enterprises, the series former distributor (in fact, their various logos still appear at the end of most episodes—but before the then-current NBC Universal Television Distribution logo). Other episodes are time-compressed; these are NTSC-converted video prints from UK PAL masters. Only a handful of episodes in the DVD sets are in their original, uncut versions (for example, many season one episodes on DVD contain scenes not in current syndication prints). Unfortunately, many episodes on the DVD versions contain tracking lines and audio problems.
The DVD sets sold in the US and Canada were released under license from NBC Universal by Imavision Distribution, a company based in Quebec. Imavision has also released a French-language version of the DVD set, sold separately. Both versions are in NTSC color, and coded for all regions. Later copies were distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment, following their acquisition of Imavision.
The DVD sets sold in the United Kingdom were released by Universal Playback (a Universal Studios Home Entertainment label); this version is in PAL color, and coded for region two. Season nine (the final season) and the post-series movies are scheduled to be released during 2011.
Some time earlier, some single Little House episodes were released on both DVD and VHS by GoodTimes Entertainment.
Before retail DVDs were available, the Little House episodes were available through a Columbia House club subscription. These VHS tapes contained two episodes per tape and were only available at a club price. The episodes on these VHS tapes, unlike the current DVDs, were not edited and remain the only commercially available uncut episodes.

A delay of the releases is advised because of problems with the master tapes. It is indicated to be in the second half of 2011. This information has come from Universal in Scandinavia.

[edit] Finland DVD ratings controversy

In November 2008, the Finnish Board of Film Classification rated the DVD release of the Little House on the Prairie"Banned for under-18s". This was due to Universal Pictures' decision not to submit the series to state review, to avoid the state review fee of approximately USD $27,500.[12] series as suitable for adults only—requiring a sticker to be affixed to all DVDs saying

About Little House on the Prairie

Based on the autobiographical books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie chronicles the life and times of the Ingalls family and the other residents in and around the fictional town of Walnut Grove. Recounted by the Ingalls' middle daughter Laura, the show is a vivid exploration of life on the American frontier. The series begins with head of the household, Charles, relocating his family from Wisconsin to the banks of Plum Creek in Minnesota. Once the family builds and settles in their new cabin, Charles along with wife Caroline and their three young daughters -- Mary, Laura and Carrie -- begin to move into a life that is expected to bring better opportunities and advantages.

It's not long before the Ingalls learn that life on the frontier is not as easy as it seems. With little money to keep their farm flourishing, Charles must often take multiple jobs in exchange for his needed farming supplies. His wife helps keep the family together with her nurturing and compassionate strength. Cooking, cleaning, raising the children and pitching in with the farming are what she does best. While Ma and Pa are working to keep the family together, oldest daughter Mary focuses on her books and exceling in school. As one of the prettiest girls in Walnut Grove, Mary is highly coveted by the local boys. With perfect scores in school and a host of boys eager to walk her home, Mary is used to a life without many obstacles. But when a critical illness leads to the unexpected loss of her eyesight, Mary is forced to face new obstacles.

Middle daughter Laura is a natural-born explorer. Enthusiastic to venture into the wide open frontier, she helps bring new insight into her family's life in Walnut Grove and the people who live there. Laura's strong spirit and often feisty demeanor is a perfect balance to Mary's gentle manner. Laura is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs and she will confront anyone who dares to challenge her, including the Olesons and their horrible daughter, Nellie.

The real Laura Ingalls Wilder was born Feb. 7, 1867 in Pepin, Wis. In 1868, her parents Charles and Caroline moved Laura and her sister Mary to the prairies of Kansas. Life on the prairie was at times quite joyful and others, filled with hardship and disappointment. When Laura reached middle age, she began to journal her life and adventures during her upbringing on the Kansas plains in the 1800s. Upon securing a publisher, she wrote a successful series of children's books chronicling her youth on the frontier.

In the early 1970s, TV producer and executive Ed Friendly came across the autobiographical Little House on the Prairie books. He was easily charmed by the tales of life on the American frontier and approached Michael Landon to direct a pilot. Once Landon suggested himself for the role of Charles, NBC knew they had the makings of a hit series. With a loose adaptation of the original books, Little House on the Prairie debuted with exceptional ratings. For nine strong years, American audiences had a front-row seat to life in a 19th-century pioneer town. The trailblazing series gave birth to some of the most memorable characters in TV history: TV Guide rated Charles Ingalls as the Fourth Greatest TV Dad of all time and Nellie Oleson was crowned No. 3 of TV's Top 10 Biggest Brats.

On March 21, 1983, Little House on the Prairie took its final bow. Though audiences no longer wanted to see the Ingalls on a weekly basis, they still craved more. To satisfy their appetite, four TV movies based on the original series were produced. Today, it is finding fame again with a younger set of fans. Even with the modern comforts of the 21st century, people around the world can still relate to the love, strong morals and rich family values that the Ingalls represent. And for the enthusiasts who grew-up watching the popular television drama, Little House on the Prairie still continues to fulfill the pioneer seeker in all of us.

Little House On The Prairie

Based on the popular "Little House" book series by Laura Ingalls-Wilder, this hour long dramatic series followed the frontier lives of Charles and Caroline Ingalls, and their three young daughters: Mary, Laura and Carrie.

A long-running drama based upon the "Little House" series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, "Little House on the Prairie" follows the lives of the simple, farming Ingalls family: Charles, Caroline, Mary, Laura, Carrie and then Grace and the later adopted Albert, James and Cassandra, who settle into a quaint little house on the banks of Plum Creek near the small town of Walnut Grove during the late 1800s. Often narrated by Laura, the series follows her simple farm upbringing from her childhood until her adulthood with Almanzo Wilder with whom she starts a family of her own. While the series is based upon the Little House books (and thus the real life of author Laura Ingalls Wilder), it is a very loose adaptation, with mostly only key events and elements of fact surviving the transition from book to TV series, the most important being Mary's eventual blindness, and Laura's future. Several other fictitious (some factual) characters make up the friendly community of Walnut Grove, including teacher Miss Beadle (succeeded by two other teachers, then Laura, then Etta Plum), Dr. Hiram Baker, Rev. Robert Alden, Mr. Hanson (of the Hanson lumber mill), and the well-to-do Olesons, owners of the local mercantile, and also the primary rivals of the Ingalls family (except the Oleson patriarch). Family friends include the Edwards family, the Garvey family and the Carters, who, in the final season, move into the Ingalls' little house.

Series Description:

The Little House on the Prairie TV show was a 60 minute drama series on NBC that featured the Ingalls family's struggles to survive the harsh life of pioneers in the 1800s on the Kansas plains. As time went by, they prospered in this new land but, of course, there were continuing challenges to their prosperity. Luckily, their love, "close-knit" family life and wonderful friends were always there to help them endure.

Little House On The Prairie Trivia:

The town was actually blown up in the Little House On The Prairie TV special titled, "The Last Farewell". Instead of allowing the "bad guys" to bulldoze the town, Michael Landon wrote the script so that the town's residents could "hold their heads high" by destroying it themselves!

At the tender young age of eleven, Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills 90210) played Laura and Almonzo's niece during Little House's final season. She also appeared in all three "reunion" movies!

Michael Landon's daughter (Leslie Landon) appeared in the last 3 Little House On The Prairie TV Specials as Etta Plum. She also appeared in some regular episodes.

Melissa Gilbert was the youngest person ever to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Michael Landon is the only actor to have three TV shows run consecutively for 5 years or more each. They were: "Bonanza (1959-1973)", "Little House on the Prairie (1974-1983)" and "Highway to Heaven (1984-1989)".

The TV show was nominated for 11 Emmys and won 3. It was also nominated for 3 Golden Globes but didn't win any.

Michael Landon's first movie role was in "These Wilder Years (1956)" starring James Cagney, Barbara Stanwyck and Walter Pidgeon. He was the young man in the pool hall scene and was not listed in the movie's credits.

500 Girls were auditioned for the part of Laura Ingalls. Melissa Gilbert was the only one who got her screen test sent to be considered at NBC Studios!
